Hume was a empiricist. He thought that a lot of the philosophical systems were highly speculative and not truly based off of experience and observation. Hume attempts to provide theories of human nature . He splits our perceptions into ideas and impressions . Complex ideas always start from simple ideas which come from impressions and feelings .  Hume fights that all complex ideas can be linked back to their simplest from and then finally to impressions . Saying this , an idea that can not be linked back to its original impression is nothing more than speculative and is dismissed . He argues that everyone has impressions of smell, texture, and color.  With this being said , to Hume there is no object apart from their properties .  On top of that , to Hume , God would be a very complex idea that came about from our ideas and the morals of human thought. Since it has no bases on hands on observations , God couldn’t exist . For the bundle theory of self ,  he questions what ideas gave humans the concept of self. As people  we think of humans having consistent characteristics that last over time. The way we look at our own perceptions may never let us see anything more than the sensations feelings and impressions . We can’t look at ourselves in one way. There is no impression we can have that tie them . In saying that , we can’t be 100% aware of ourselves. Our only awareness is of what we see and feel at any moment. Between our thought process and feelings , we put it together through memory, but at the end of it there is no evidence that connects them. The idea of soul comes from this argument .Hume says self is just a bunch of ideas that come together like a bundle that are connected or linked . Hume fights that our concept of self is a result of habits . This belief is common , but there is no support for it .Hume doesn’t think or believe that reason does anything in determining a role in encouraging or discouraging actions . Instead, he believes that the thing that changes it all is passion . An example of proof, he asks us to look at human actions according to instrumentalism . This has to do actions serving the persons purpose or not . Most of the time the acts do not and that we tend to find other motivations . Based on these arguments, he ends on the concept of reason not being the only thing to motivates anyone. In other words , reason helps make judgments. Therefore, reason does not make the basis of morality, it only acts as a father figure . On top of that , immorality according to everything is immoral. Not because it doesn’t agree with reason but because it is un pleasurable to us. This argument angered religious people in the community and the church who thought that God gave us reason to grow and learn human morals . By taking out reason, he denied God’s role as the source of morality. Hume accounts the external world in two ways . He distinguishes the two between the “vulgar opinion” (the common belief that external things we see and the idea perception are the same ) and the philosophical view (which what we see is distinct from the actual object). Hume stands by the idea that the philosophical view of representative realism is not as good as the naive realism of the common sense view. He things this because the philosophical view doest stand on whether our thought process is identical and independent or continued and different. The philosophical view tries to justify the idea of  external objects on these controversial assumptions, which results in double existence. So many people think that Hume was an atheist . I think people thought this because of his ideas on impressions and ideas . The idea of God identifies through every complex idea starting from the simplest of states pertaining to impressions and feelings . He states that all complex ideas can be traced back to their original form and then finally ending on impressions . Saying this,  the fact that the idea of God can not be linked back to its original impression,  says  nothing more than God is speculative and dismissed . Hume then says that everyone has impressions of smell, texture, and color which makes something real . Because God has none of these , God is not real to Hume because God has no properties . Making Hume a atheist .
