Mondulkiri is one of the most remote areas of Cambodia. It is located in the southern highlands area between southern Laos, Vietnam and the Center of Cambodia. It consists of a maze of basaltic plateaus, hills, savannas, marshes, forests and clearings of dense jungles on red soil.The habitants in Mondulkiri is Proto-Indo-Chinese, Austronesia ethnic minorities or Austro-Asiatic origin: Mnong Rhade, Tampua, Kraol, Ham and Stieng. Peasants of the forest, their life revolves around agricultural cycles associated with monsoons.Those people practicing the technique of clearing or burning, picking are skilled trackers and hunters. During the Khmer Rouge era, they were involved in ethnic cleansing programs and try to escape from domination of Pol Pot regime. Now they live on the edge of jungle or along trails in khmerisées or traditional homes. Households are based on long thatched roofs.Attractions• Bou Sra WaterfallBoo Sra waterfall is considered as one of the most beautiful natural waterfall in Mondukiri. It’s situated in Pich Chinda district and 43 km far from provincial town. It is three layers waterfall with 3 fall of about 15 to 20m high and stay quite close to each other.This waterfall is quite popular for its double-flow which makes bathing or picnic experience in here quite satisfied. Around it is scenic and pristine scenery but the red soil road leading to this waterfall may be quite tough. Nearby the fall, you can also find an ethnic Phnong village with small guesthouses. • Sen Monorom WaterfallSen Monorom Waterfall is also 3 stages waterfall located in Saen Monourom district and about 5km away from provincial town of Mondulkiri. Along the road, there are many place selling rubber, coffee and cashew as well. This fall is gathering place when the holidays and national festivals happen.At the waterfall, there is a large space of resting and enjoying. At Sen Monorum town, you can also have a chance to riding elephant to waterfall and enjoy a spectacular view on elephant’s back. The unique location nestled on hill of this town isolates it from hustle life outside. This is also habitats for hill tribe people so this would be a perfect destination for eco-travelers, campers and off-beaten-trail trekkers. • Phnum Prech Wildlife SanctuaryPhnum Prech Wildlife Sanctuary is also among the most famous tourist attractions in Mondulkiri. This sanctuary locates at the middle of rain forests and beautiful forest of the Eastern Plains. This attraction is perfect for natural lovers as its tranquil scenery and wildlife. Government and local authority works together to keep this Phnum Prech Wildlife Sanctuary home for endangered species of Cambodia with variety valuable mammals, birds and reptiles. It’s ideal to take half day or full day trip camping here. • Phnom Nam Lear SanctuaryPhnom Nam Lear Sanctuary is less well-known in compare to Phnum Prech Wildlife Sanctuary but it rare and splendid wildlife is also hard to forget once you visit. This sanctuary can provide great winding trekking trails through forests, cliffs, streams and waterfalls.
