In the second week of Philosophy, professor Scow and the class discussed the argument of God’s existence.  Readings from Anselm, and Aquinas were review and the class argued against facts before they were given the true answers/proof by the professor.  In this week’s meetings, professor Scow thought the class a few lessons on critical thinking.

            In Anselm Ontological proof argument, the class were told to review chapter two, three, four and fifteen.  In chapter two, Anselm spoke about God’s existence: He say that God exist in today’s world.  In chapter three he went on to explain that God cannot not exist, which is very similar to chapter two.  An example was given by professor Scow; who said, “If I was not born, can I said that I cannot not exist?” which means if the word” God” exists, why would they not be a good. Another example can the “Big foot” scenario.  If there is a big foot print in the forest, would you assume that there is something giant in the forest? Yes.  You will not say “Big foot cannot not exist if you never saw the foot print.

            In chapter fifteen, Anselm wrote about God being beyond our (human being) comprehension.  If God is beyond our comprehension, how do we know that he exists?  If God is beyond our comprehension, how do we know the true meaning of god.  Why do we use the word God in general?  In Palms 14:1 states “The fool says in his heart, there is no God” How can a fool use the word “God” if there is no God.  Clearly Anselm states what God means, but the fool states that there is no god.  The fool does not know the true meaning of the word “God”.  The last sentence can be applied to today’s society: people use certain words, but do not know the meaning of it.

            Aquinas critiques Anselm’s ontological Proof by an explanation that God’s existence can   be proven in fives ways.  Motion is the first way, this means if something happens or move, it is active via something else. Cause and effect is the second way, which brings me back to the big foot example.  The footprint is the effect and the object is the cause of the foot print. Nothing will be the cause of itself, there will always be an effect it the cause, which means that god is the cause.  Modality is the third way, which must do with objects coming into this world and going away, but did they ever not exist?  Gradation is the forth way, which explains the different degrees in goodness in many ways.  Final cause is the last way, which concludes the argument after the lead point, explaining the cons and pros and now giving the answer.
