In today’s world we are thriving off of new technology, new cars, new industries eat. What we don’t realize is all the toxins and damage we cause to our earth. Deforestation, greenhouse gases, co2, pollution. To build all these new industries we must create a land for them to begin building, causing the cut down of trees and harming the homes of wildlife animals. For restaurants they need land for cows, cows create methane which goes into our atmosphere.carbon is being emitted as well and that’s another obstacle due to how difficult it is to have that removed. Every action has a reaction andas we can see our earth has been getting the backlash of our action. This essay will speak on how the earth has been going through MANY changes due to the involvement of human actions.Climate ChangeToday’s world is massively different from what it was before globalization, urbanization and industrialization. All of this has created an immense environmental dilemma that has taken its toll on earth. The issue of the environment has suddenly developed into a well-known issue which is greatly discussed throughout the world, but the reality is that by having discussions and meetings it’s not going to solve this significant issue that’s destroying earth. So what is really being done to address and solve this matter? The environmental dilemmas we face today- include climate change, air pollution, oil spills and acid rain which come from the use of fossil fuels. As gases begin to be released into our atmosphere, greenhouse gases also get trapped in the atmosphere, causing a rise in temperature which is harmful to the planet and everyone.Fossil fuel combustion releases some common air pollutants that have local and global effects on human health and the environment. These pollutants consist of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4), both of which are major greenhouse gases, as well as particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxides (NOx), Sulphur oxides (SOx) and carbon monoxide (CO) (British Columbia, 2015). One main pollutant is carbon dioxide. Over the years we humans have contributed to the addition of carbon dioxide to our atmosphere. On January 16th, 2005 the carbon level was a 378.21 parts per million as time has passed we have gone up to 406.94 parts per million as of August 17th, 2017. In the matter of 12 years we have managed to go up 28.73 parts per million. “The carbon levels in our atmosphere are at their highest in 650,000 years.” (NASA). We humans are increasing the level by two parts per million per year by burning fossil fuels and cutting down forests.Did you know seventy percent of electricity is generated from burning fossil fuels? We utilize electricity on a daily basis, the light in our houses the power outlets the refrigerator, all those things consume energy in order to work, so imagine how much fossil fuels are being released in the United States? As of 2011-2015 the fossil fuel consumption of the United States is 83.6%. Also in the year of 2016, the United States produced 67% of electricity generation. Power plants that burn fossil fuels and geothermal power plants are the generic cause of 40% energy related CO2 discharge in the United States. I went to the EPA website and checked how much fuel mix my region/ zip code area was using. My zip code is 85713, this specific region uses 9.6% of non-hydro renewables, 6.4% of hydro, 23.6% of nuclear, 39.1% of gas, and 21.3% of coal. National we use 6.8% non-hydro renewables, 6.25 hydro, 19.5% nuclear, 0.7% oil, 27.5% gas, and 38.7% coal. As we can see the United States uses more coal nationwide than region wide, but we can also see the in my region we use 11.6% more gas. The personal costs of gas mainly surround the idea of our cars. The cars we drive release CO2 into our atmosphere, which can also put an increase for greenhouse gases. Cars are used every single day, so we are constantly pumping gas. This can create smog and carbon monoxide. In order to decrease the amount of CO2 we release in the atmosphere, we need to be using electric cars, but the issue is not everyone can afford them. The estimated amount of a tesla car starts at $101,500. The only issue here is that they people who have big money are the only ones who can actually buy their cars. The other route you can take is buying a car that saves you gas, for example a hybrid car like the 2010 Toyota Camry Hybrid, it has 34 MPG. By getting a car that gets more miles per gallon you will save more money ( you won’t need to pump gas every 1-2 days) and release less CO2 since they are electric cars. The graph below shows 10 different cars. It shows how much MPG they get combined, in the city, and on the highwayThe worst car on the graph is the 1989 Chevrolet C1500 pick-up, it got 13 MPG combined, 13 MPG in the city, and 14 MPG on the highway. The middle car was the 2007 Chevrolet Malibu, it got 19 MPG combined, 16 MPG in the city, and 23 MPG on the highway. The best car was the 2006 Toyota Corolla, it got 29 MPG combined, 26 MPG in the city, and 35 MPG on the highway. Shouldn’t every company that puts CO2 into the atmosphere be removing it as well? If the CO2 levels decrease it can save the planet from a temperature rise. When the temperature rises the heat in our atmosphere will be trapped causing our planet to completely change (flooding, earthquakes etc.) The environmental costs we are facing is inertia, resistance to change- huge interlocking industrial, economic, and political establishments all beholden to fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are a problem. If greenhouse gases and CO2 levels keep growing the sea levels will rise causing many populated islands in the pacific and the Indian Ocean to disappear. In order to prevent this, the world must cut its dependence on fossil fuels by more than half.
