Deirdre Tang Momtha SivapathasundHSP3U1- 02December 19 2017 Sexual harassment is an unwelcome behaviour and act of sexual performances consisting of favours done on an individual and other form of verbal and physical conduct of a sexual nature. “Sexual harassment may include submission to such conduct is made either explicitly or implicitly a term or condition of an individual’s employment, or submission to or rejection of such conduct by an individual is used as a basis for employment decisions affecting such individual, or such conduct has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with an individual’s work performance or creating an intimidating, hostile, or offensive working environment.”( Gov of Canada ) Unfortunately women around the world has been experiencing sexual harassments since years far back. Women began to tell their stories and expose the pervasiveness of sexual harassment in their societies. “A 1992 International Labor Organization survey of 23 countries revealed what women already know: that sexual harassment is a major problem for women all over the world. Sexual harassment affects women’s mental and physical health as well as their social and economic status. The level of tolerance for sexual harassment varies from culture to culture.”(MasterMedia Limited, New York, 1994) Victims of sexual harassment can experience long-term depression, according to Blackstone. In a recent study of 1,000 youths, Blackstone found that people sexually harassed in their teens and early 20s can experience depressive symptoms into their 30s.Many people who experience sexual harassment have feelings of self-doubt, Blackstone said. “For some people, that self-doubt turned into self-blame,” she said, and victims can feel responsible for what happened. Such self-blame may have a negative effect on mental health, including promoting feelings of depression. Many studies have found a link between experiences of sexual harassment and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which includes re-experiencing the trauma, and avoiding people or things that may remind the victim of the harassment. Issues with blood pressures and sleep problems may also occur to the victims of sexual harassments. Suicide is a colossal problem from sexual harassment , ” A 1997 study of more than 1,000 Canadian high school students suggested sexual harassment may lead to suicidal behaviors. The study found that 23 percent of students had experienced at least one incident of unwanted sexual touching, sexual threats or remarks, or indecent exposure in the past six months. Women who had experienced frequent, unwanted sexual touching, 15 percent said they had made suicidal attempts “often” in the past six months, compared with 2 percent of students that had not experienced sexual harassment.” (Rettner, 2011) ” Sexual harassment is, above all, a manifestation of power relations  women are much more likely to be victims of sexual harassment precisely because they more often than men lack power, are in more vulnerable and insecure positions, lack self confidence, or have been socialized to suffer in silence. In order to understand why women endure the vast majority of sexual harassment, it is important to look at some of the underlying causes of this phenomenon.” ( Petrocelli , 2003)  “Women employed in fields that are traditionally considered woman’s work, such as waitresses and secretaries, are often given menial, degrading tasks.”(Golshan , 2017)  They are often called demeaning name that would emotionally hurt the victim  , and they are led to believe that a certain amount of male domination and sexism is normal. Male workers who harass a woman on the job are doing more than annoying her. They are reminding her of her vulnerability, creating tensions that make her job more difficult and making her hesitant to seek higher paying jobs where she may perceive the tension as even greater. In short, sexual harassment creates a climate of intimidation and repression. A woman who is the target of sexual harassment often goes through the same process of victimization as one who has suffered rape, battering or other gender-related crimes- frequently blaming herself and doubting her own self-worth.All of this reinforces the idea that women workers are of little value in the workplace. Women who try to break into traditionally all-male work, such as construction jobs, medicine or investment banking, often suffer even more intense harassment clearly aimed at forcing them to leave. As of 2017 over 30 female celebrities were announced as victims of sexual harassment in addition approximately 11 successful men was accused of sexual harassment after the big breakdown of Harvey Weinstein this shows even with the fame women are still being neglected and thrown into the category as something less powerful than man. A tremendous amount of these celebrities victims were sexually harassed by the famous director Harvey Weinstein who is now under investigation .  With just one man, many were affected . As this shows many of these victims has waited for a long time before speaking up , which means there are countless victims who has been keeping quiet about their story with sexual harassment due to fear of the outcome it would lead them to. “One 2003 study found that 75% of employees who spoke out against workplace mistreatment faced some form of retaliation,” the EEOC report found. For example in Weinstein’s case, the Hollywood executive would threaten up-and-coming actresses’ careers if they did not engage with him, or place negative stories about them in the media to mire their names in scandal. These tactics are aimed to isolate and silence victims.A survey conducted on  33 females shows 42.4 % of the respondents strongly disagreed while 12.1 % of the respondents agreed. This shows even with a small amount of respondents agreeing there is still people out there believing in the fact of sexual harassment is an act provoked by women such as the common accusation of women wearing inappropriate clothes as a way to draw attention to men to sexually harass them. Sexual harassment is not an act done due to any type of provocation or attraction because in the end if that was true then it would not be harassment because as some believe that woman are provoking men into the act they will also implying that women who are under the act of any type of provocation has also given permission and consent to the male to perform any type of sexual assaults. According to the survey 15.2 percent of the respondents strongly agreed and 42.4 percents agreed with the statement “I know someone who has experienced sexual harassment in their life.” This data indicates that with just 33 respondents over 50 percents of them knows someone who has dealt with sexual harassment which means there are thousands and million of victims who has been sexually harassed and felt scared or ashamed to speak up about their experience. Many of victims in our society today are dealing with many mental difficulties that comes along with sexual harassment such as self shame and blame. No victims of sexual harassment are in the place at fault for such an abhorrent action. Society is lacking on helping victim of sexual harassment and raising awareness towards this issue . In an article by National Statistics of Sexual Harassment states that each year, an estimated of 25,000 American women will become pregnant following an act of sexual violence. As many as 22,000 of those pregnancies could be prevented through the prompt use of emergency contraception. and  Sexual assault is the violent crime that is least often reported to law enforcement officials. A 2000 study from the Bureau of Justice Statistics found that only 28% of victims report their sexual assault to the police. This sums up, sexual harassment does not only affect the victim at the moment of the incident but also the times after the incident and the victims are just expected to know how to cope and deal with the consequences the cupuit has lead them to .  According to the survey 57.6  percent of the respondents strongly disagreed with the statement that I believed sexual harassment is only performed by men and 33.3 percent disagreed with the statement”I believe sexual harassment is only performed by men.” This data indicates that sexual harassment is known to be performed by both female and male even though the rate of male sexual harassment is said to be performed by male, the rate of female sexual harassment has been increasing . The internet has shown the biased views of victims and non victims of sexual harassment towards men only but not women. Despite the fact that today in social media there has been an increase associating with femininity and independency with  powerful women, qualities informed by sexuality continue to play a dominant role in the shaping of femininity. Men often are blamed for all causes of sexual harassment due to stereotypes causing many to ignore the importance of sexual harassment which is not who did it but what was done instead to the victim.  This should raise awareness on why we should not to be gender biased towards sexual harassment. In conclusion, sexual harassment is not something to be taken as a humor or gag act. Sexual harassment is still  happening everyday all around the world, many of innocent victims are facing struggles no one should have to deal with all . This issue should be seen as one of the big issues we have in our society today as there many cases of sexual harassment increasing day by day that is being ignored for other issues happening in society . Sexual harassment is something that can be changed, we can make an effort to raise awareness and help those in need for support . Social media needs to portray the importance of well being and teach victims their value and how to speak up about the issue because it is not the victim’s fault. Not only will this help prevent the rate of sexual harassment to continue increasing , it will also benefit the rate of mental health from increasing. This process will require patience and unity nevertheless it is not too late to help make a change now .
